Manchester City have confirmed the signing of England fullback Alex Greenwood on a three–year contract.
The 27-year-old joins City after a year long spell with French Champions, Olympique Lyonnais.
During her time abroad, Greenwood helped Lyon to win their fourteenth Division 1 Féminine title, as well as their seventh Champions League title last month.
On her time away Greenwood commented, “I’ve learned so much about myself over the past 15 months by living away from home and in a different culture and environment, but it’s given me so much time to develop both personally and as a player.”
Greenwood also spoke about signing on the dotted line with the Manchester Blues, adding, “now is the time for a new challenge though and having experienced such a successful campaign last season, when you get that taste for a winning mentality, it’s addictive and I just want to continue that with City.”
A left back by trade, Greenwood brings a pace and accuracy to the wing. She is also well known for herpinpoint crosses and expertise in taking set pieces.
Greenwood’s arrival boosts City’s already experienced defence that little bit further. Greenwood joins Demi Stokes, Megan Campbell, Gemma Bonner, captain Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze and Esme Morgan at the back, giving boss, Gareth Taylor, a much-needed depth in his defensive ranks.
Greenwood’s return to England also looks to make the Manchester derby all the more interesting. Greenwoodpreviously captained rivals Manchester United, and led the Red Devils to Championship victory and WSL promotion in 2019.
Greenwood is City’s fifth summer signing. Fellow Lionesses Lucy Bronze and Chloe Kelly, and USWNT midfielders Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle complete the set.
