Yeovil Town Women enjoyed a victorious homecoming on Sunday, as they played a fixture at Huish Park for the first time since their rebirth in 2023. The game took place less than two weeks after it was revealed that their previous incarnation, under the guise of Bridgwater United, will be playing their home games at Clevedon next year – some 50 miles away.
A comprehensive 7-1 victory over local rivals Weymouth was played out in glorious weather, witnessed by a crowd of 298, and guaranteed that the team will finish in third place in their first season in the South West Regional League.
Weymouth stunned the home crowd by taking the lead five minutes into the game, with Ellie Porter steering home Lucy Roberts’ free kick at the back post. But their joy only lasted for two minutes before Yeovil equalised through Zoe Ball, and went on to dominate proceedings from that point onwards. After 18 minutes, Terri Will headed the home side in front from a corner, and Jodie Cornwall also struck before half-time to make it 3-1 at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, Yeovil’s lead was extended further when Mollie Childs chipped the ball over the Weymouth goalkeeper, after good work from Zara Hunt. And Hunt was still tormenting the Weymouth defence three minutes later when she was brought down in the penalty area, and Yeovil goalkeeper Emily Hall stepped forward to convert the spot kick. The comfortable derby victory was rounded off with two more goals from Jodie Cornwall to complete her hat-trick.
We were fortunate to have photographer Ian Middlebrook on hand to capture the action.
