Leeds United maintained their flawless start to the season with a 3-0 victory over local rivals Huddersfield Town in the FA WNL Cup Group T stage.
A pre-match downpour threatened to dampen spirits at the BD Community Stadium, but the West Yorkshire weather cleared just in time for kick-off as Simon Wood’s side delivered a high-tempo, clinical display to secure local bragging rights.
The first 10 minutes were evenly matched until Izzy Dean broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, timing her run to perfection to meet a brilliant cross and fire Leeds ahead. The hosts then settled early, while a hardworking Huddersfield side closed down space.
Coming back from half-time, Huddersfield came out fighting. They put together an impressive spell, controlling the play briefly and testing the Leeds backline as they hunted for an equaliser. But just after the hour mark, Leeds turned the tide as Amy Woodruff scored an incredible long-range lob for Leeds’ second goal.
Huddersfield’s chances of coming away with a point, or three, started to look slim as the visitors started to crack while Leeds continued to pile on the pressure. A superb volley from Kath Smith in the 82nd minutes put the game completely out of reach for Huddersfield Town.
From start to finish, Leeds did an excellent job controlling the game to secure another big three points in the cup standings. While both teams clearly wanted the win and gave it everything they had, Leeds were simply clinical when it mattered most, kept their heads, and maintained their impressive press until the final whistle.
