After last year’s hiatus the Since 71 awards are back although there will be just one awarded this year, slightly belatedly but the Game Changer Award and this year it goes to Talking WoSo.
The purpose of the Game Changer Award is to recognise a club, player, coach or fan who has gone above and beyond to support their team, community or push to change perceptions of women’s football for the better. Previous winners include Lewes Football Club, Alex Scott and Girls on the Ball.
Talking WoSo is a dedicated women’s football platform that focuses on tiers three to seven of the English women’s football pyramid—areas often overlooked by the mainstream media. These are the clubs that deserve recognition, respect, and visibility.
Like us, Talking WoSo understands the importance of the FA Women’s National League (FA WNL) and how increasing exposure and investment at this level strengthens the overall structure of women’s football in the UK.
Craig is extremely humble and when I told him about the award, he thought I was mad for selecting him for the award. He really doesn’t have any idea how much he is valued by everyone in the game, especially those from the FA WNL down to the grassroots level.
Many players at this level remember a time when their matches received little attention. Those I speak with often express deep gratitude for individuals like Craig. His dedication to sharing their stories has not only given them visibility but also validated their roles as athletes and local sporting heroes.
The former Chair of the FA Women’s National League shared with me, “Talking WoSo has been instrumental in promoting the women’s amateur game for several years. Their contribution to raising awareness of the Pyramid cannot be underestimated. They’ve actively supported clubs, players, and leagues, especially where support from local and governing bodies has been lacking. Craig, in particular, stands out as one of the countless volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time, passion, and commitment for the love of the game.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Craig during my tenure as Chair of the FA WNL. His work on social media platforms, alongside the league’s own promotion efforts, has significantly boosted awareness of the women’s game to where it is today. Craig’s professionalism, dedication, and integrity are vital to the development of the women’s amateur game. His contributions deserve our collective thanks, and I look forward to following his continued work.”
Nick, from the Wolves Women Podcast, echoed these sentiments: “Talking WoSo is a champion of football outside the spotlight and glamour of the Women’s Super League. It provides a service that many mainstream outlets overlook, sharing breaking news stories like manager and player departures, and offering essential information for travelling fans. They’ve also been vocal about issues like the discrepancies in Women’s FA Cup prize money, when others have remained silent.
“Talking WoSo is more than just a platform; it’s a bastion for the women’s game. Through them, many fans have become more engaged with their clubs and leagues.”
Congratulations Craig and Talking WoSo, this award is richly deserved!
