Sunderland and Southampton played out a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light as both sides extended their unbeaten starts to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 campaign.
It was an entertaining end-to-end encounter despite the lack of goals, with both teams creating opportunities to break the deadlock and force their respective goalkeepers into action.
Frances Stenson and Grace Moloney were called upon several times throughout the contest, with neither side able to find the decisive finish that would have separated the two teams.
With the sun beating down on the Stadium of Light, the intensity of the contest occasionally spilled over, with several fouls and injuries disrupting the flow of the game.
Sunderland looked to change the dynamic in the second half by introducing Emily Scarr in the 67th minute, but the substitute was unable to provide the spark required to produce a late winner.
Southampton vice-captain Megan Collett was among the standout performers, producing an impressive display at full-back. She was a constant threat when carrying the ball forward, completing multiple successful dribbles while recording a 73 per cent success rate in her duels.
Ultimately, neither side could find a way through as the points were shared.
The result keeps Sunderland second in the table, with Newcastle United maintaining their position at the summit after winning all of their opening fixtures.
For Southampton, it was another point on the road, but their second consecutive 0-0 draw leaves them sitting fifth in the early WSL2 standings.
