London City Lionesses extended their unbeaten run in the Barclays Women’s Championship to 9 games at St Mary’s Stadium on Good Friday, after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Southampton. In doing so, they moved into a 5 point lead over Birmingham City, who have just three games left to catch them. The two rivals will meet at St Andrews on 4th May in what will likely be the title decider.

Isobel Goodwin was the star of the show, earning the match ball with a well taken hat-trick. She opened the scoring within five minutes of kick-off to ease any nerves for the travelling fans, and then doubled the lead after 20 minutes – both strikes being assisted by Arsenal loanee Freyah Godfrey.

Goodwin then turned provider just before half-time, setting up Ghanaian international Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah on the edge of the penalty area to slam the ball home off the inside of the post for a 3-0 lead at the break. Southampton worked hard and pulled a goal back through Molly Pike on 57 minutes, but Goodwin restored the three goal advantage 5 minutes later, heading in Boye-Hlorkah’s cross from the left wing.

We were fortunate to have photographer Ian Middlebrook on hand to capture the action.
