Clinical Sunderland came out on top in the Tyne-Wear derby, securing a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United to climb to 11th in the Subway Players’ Cup standings. The Black Cats now sit just outside the play-off places on goal difference, while Newcastle remain 21st out of the competition’s 24 teams.
The first half had plenty of action but lacked the finishing touch, with Newcastle creating several excellent chances only to be denied by an impressive Noa Schumacher in the Sunderland goal. With the Black Cats offering little attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes, head coach Melanie Reay turned to her bench at half-time, introducing 20-year-old Katy Watson and London City Lionesses loanee Sanni Franssi in search of a spark.
The changes proved decisive as Sunderland broke the deadlock through a superb counter-attacking move. Substitute Watson led the charge before delivering an excellent cross into the box, where Katie Kitching met it with an equally impressive header, finding the far corner to put the visitors ahead.
Buoyed by the breakthrough, the Black Cats looked to build on their advantage, unleashing a flurry of efforts that forced Manchester United loanee Kayla Rendell into a string of outstanding saves to keep Newcastle in the contest.
The Magpies were handed a golden opportunity to level the score in the 65th minute when a long ball from the Newcastle backline caused problems for Sunderland’s defence. Schumacher rushed out and brought down Jordan Nobbs inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with little choice but to point to the spot.
Martha Thomas stepped up with the chance to bring Newcastle level, but Schumacher proved the hero once again, pushing the penalty wide to preserve Sunderland’s lead.
The missed spot-kick gave Newcastle renewed belief, and the hosts began to build momentum as they searched desperately for an equaliser. However, a commanding defensive display from captain Brianna Westrup and youngster Chloe Paxton ensured Sunderland held firm, keeping a clean sheet through the closing stages to secure a valuable derby victory.
