Manchester United have confirmed the signing of USWNT forward Christen Press.
Press will remain with United until the end of the 2020/21 season, subject to obtaining a work permit.
The 31-year-old joins the Red Devils from NWSL side Utah Royals, with 10 goals in 25 appearances to her name. Press also boasts 58 goals in 138 appearances for the national team, including one that took the USWNT to the 2019 World Cup final over the Lionesses.
Lethal with both feet, Press has a speed and fluidity that easily stretches a backline, Press is currently considered as one of the most proficient forwards of the game.
On her move, Press said, “I’m really excited to be joining Manchester United this season. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to play for such an elite club and beyond ready to get back on the field.”
Manchester United manager, Casey Stoney commented, “Christen is a world-class player and we are thrilled to have her on board at the club. She has a proven record and her stats speak for themselves; she’s a ruthless striker who scores so many different types of goals, and I know she can add some real quality to our squad. Christen is also hugely experienced and for me it’s fantastic to add another senior figure like her in the dressing room.”
Press is not the first USWNT star to make the move across the pond. Fellow forward Tobin Heath has also joined United, whereas midfielders, Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle, have opted for City blue.
The addition of tried and tested goal scorers, Press and Heath, look to set the Red Devils in good stead with their ambition to break into the “top-three”. United finished 4th in the WSL last season scoring 24 goals, behind Arsenal, who scored 40.
Boss, Stoney, has often spoken about her long-term plans with United, vocal in her desire to build up organically. Yet, the opportunity to play amongst the experience and quality of the world class Press and Heath will undoubtably spur on her developing side.
Press and Heath strengthen United’s forward line, joining their already robust ranks alongside Jess Sigsworth, Leah Galton, Ivana Fuso, Kirsty Hanson, Jane Ross, and newly appointed Lioness Ella Toone.
Manchester United came out of the box booming in their opening game of the season last weekend, firmly holding champions Chelsea in a 1-1 draw.
They will go on to play Birmingham City on Sunday 13th September at 2pm.
