ANOC Games Match Report: Team GB 5-4 Paraguay

Team GB’s women’s beach soccer team opened won their opening game in the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games against Paraguay thanks to a late winner from Portsmouth goalkeeper, Hannah Haughton.

Neither side will have been too happy with how they began the game but Perry Northeast’s side were the happier after a goal from Gemma Hillier.

Paraguay managed to level the match through Fanny Godoy until Team GB went ahead 4-1 through Sarah Kempson and two from Molly Clark. The game appeared to have been all over but the Paraguayan’s hadn’t read the script and netted with three strikes in quick succession from Godoy and Jennifer Mora.

It was left to the keeper to to save the day and give Team GB a 5-4 win.

Team GB captain, Kempson told teamgb.com “It was an interesting first game, but that is what beach soccer is all about. Being 4-1 up is where we wanted to be but we took our foot off the gas and that made us grind out today’s result. 

“Our next match is against the USA and it is a night match, none of the team have experienced a night game before so we are really excited. We know (USA) are going to run us, and we just need to play our game.”
