Gareth Taylor described Lauren Hemp as an incredible young player who is a big part of what Manchester City are trying to achieve ahead of their match against rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

Despite City’s slow start in the Women’s Super League this season, they can really make a statement of intent by securing victory against the reigning champions.

They sit 11 points off leaders Arsenal and have been inconsistent so far. However, last time out they eased past bottom of the table Leicester to head into this game off the back of two straight wins.

Meanwhile, Emma Hayes’ Chelsea extended their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions after beating Swiss side Servette in the Champions League Group Stages.

Ahead of the game, Taylor emphasised that it was less about getting revenge, after defeat in the Women’s FA Cup Semi-Final, and more about the team’s performance.

“We need to focus on what we do and stick to our principles,” he said. “Fluidity in our play and rhythm is very important.”

He praised Lauren Hemp who dazzled in the game against Leicester saying: “I couldn’t ask to work with a better young player. She is so humble and probably doesn’t realise just how good she is.”

In response, Hemp said: “It’s nice to hear those things be said about me. I’ve learnt a lot from Gareth, you want someone who is going to believe in you and trust you.

“I don’t mind the pressure, I like when it’s on me and I’m really excited for the game.”

The fixture forms a key part of the Women’s Football Weekend and can be seen live on Sky Sports this Sunday with coverage starting from 2.45pm.
