Southampton FC Women overcame a sluggish start at the Silverlake Stadium to secure a high-scoring victory over Sheffield United on Friday the third of April. Despite falling behind early to a 12th-minute strike from Amy Andrews, the Saints found their rhythm following a brief tactical reset. A head injury brought Amy Goddard’s match to a premature end, with the skipper leaving the pitch with a bandaged head to address the bleeding. They turned the tide just before halftime with two quickfire goals from Jess Simpson and Michaela McAlonie, heading into the break with a hard-earned lead.
The visitors managed to pull level in the second half after a handball resulted in a penalty, which Andrews confidently converted for her second of the match. The contest appeared to be heading toward a stalemate as the pace slowed, but Southampton’s late-game energy eventually broke the Sheffield defense.
The final ten minutes belonged entirely to the Saints, sparked by Mary Bashford bundling the ball home in the 86th minute. Following a Sheffield United red card, Aimee Palmer curled a brilliant free-kick into the top corner, and Bashford scored a second in stoppage time to seal a 5-2 win.
