Sunderland secured a crucial 1–0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park, leaving the home side rooted to the foot of the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 table.
Eleanor Dale scored the only goal of the match with a brilliant early header. The visitors controlled much of the game, but Portsmouth had a chance to equalise in the 75th minute when Hornby broke through, only to be denied by an excellent save from Lambourne.
The defeat leaves Portsmouth still searching for answers at the bottom of the table, while Sunderland’s sharp start and solid defensive display see them climb up the standings.
