Weymouth got their season off to a winning start on Sunday when they eased into the Second Qualifying Round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a 4-0 victory over Frome Town. The Dorset team travelled to Somerset with a new management team and a much changed squad from last season. The two teams have met a few times before, when they were rivals in the South West Regional League, but with Frome having dropped down to the Somerset County League last season the pressure was on Weymouth to show their credentials.

The visitors started well and took the lead within 10 minutes with a well taken goal from young Evie Scragg. They suffered a big blow shortly afterwards when experienced midfielder Jody Sapsford had to be carried off with a knee injury, but Ellia Webb helped to settle their nerves when she doubled their lead just before half-time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Weymouth’s lead was extended to three when vice-captain Emma Potter scored from range. Frome battled hard to keep the game alive and had some chances of their own, but with only 11 players available they tired towards the end of the game.

As full-time approached, Weymouth’s new captain Annie Redding completed a 4-0 victory when she rounded the Frome keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net. Weymouth now travel to Devon in the next round, where they will face Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police.

We were fortunate to have photographer Ian Middlebrook on hand to capture the action.
