MK Dons vs Watford 19-2-2023
After last week’s disappointment vs Gillingham, the Dons took the short trip over to local rivals Watford in the FAWNL Southern Premiership. As they looked to get back to winning ways. But Watford managed to spoil the party and take all 3 points thanks to a Word Class winner from Faye Brough, which left the Dons heartbroken at full time.
With only three minutes into the game the Dons took an early lead after a well taken and composed finish from Laura Mitchell, slotting the ball passed the keeper. This was her second goal vs the Golden Girls this season.1-0
After the early start from the Dons the Golden Girls looked to get back into the game. Both midfields seemed to be on top of each other and only a few chances were given for either side, but as the game moved closer towards half time, Watford’s professionalism and fitness start to tell as they started to offer more a threat in the attacking third, what resulted in a well taking equaliser from Annie Rossiter after Adekite Fatuga-Dada did all the hard work. 1-1
The Second half started like the end of the first half, both midfields were again evenly matched and opportunities were few and far between each other. Dons managed to create one chance but were denied by Georgie Ferguson as she pulled off an amazing one-handed save from a powerful header after a great delivery from a Nicole Pepper corner.
As the clock started to tick towards 90. The Golden Girls were applying lots of pressure on the MK Dons defence. Sofia Stovold and Tally Miles were holding on, and both looked like they wouldn’t be beaten. Incidentally what’s more impressive was this was Sofia’s first game back for the Dons after she dislocated her shoulder on the 2 October 2022.
But alas it wasn’t meant to be. From a quick throw in the Golden Girls left hand side the ball found its way to Faye Brough who managed to turn her defender, and outside of the right foot fade the ball away from the reach of Chloe Sansom into the top corner of the net.
The Watford bench erupted in mass celebration running onto the field of play. Watford knew just how important that goal was, and the 3 points were in their quest for promotion. 2-1
