Match Preview : MK Dons vs Cardiff City Ladies

Milton Keynes Dons Women Celebration during the FAWNL Game between Hashtag United and MK Dons Women at the Parkside, South Ockendon, England on 8 October 2023.

Dons make the long trip down the M4 as they look to extinguish the Welsh fire out of Cardiff City Ladies.

In any sporting occasion a game between  England and Wales means a lot to both teams, the sporting rivalry has been going for hundreds of years and politically for a lot of lot longer (But we will not get into that).

Both teams have a huge set of pride and will be equally desperate to win which makes this game truly an event for this weekend. So, if you are around in the South West or in Cardiff this weekend why not attended this fixture? As you could be in for a cracking game.

MK Dons Women will find a Cardiff City side hungry and up for a fight, and if they struggle to understand this the home side with the support of their fans could create one of the hardest atmospheres they have encountered all season.

Cardiff City to their own high standards have not had the best of starts to life back in tier 3. They currently find themselves sitting 9th in the league with 6 points and with only a single win in the league to their name. What was a comprehensive 4-0 win away to London Bees.

But they almost caused an upset a few weeks ago vs Rugby Borough who narrowly won 3-2. Looking the game, it was a frantic start with 3 goals being scored within 15 minutes. We would once again expect a similar start this weekend as Cardiff will look to attack the Dons early on. As currently the Dons have a recent habit of conceding first goal.

Cori Williams will once again be looking to score. Currently Cori is leading the line for Cardiff this season with 6 goals scored in 9 games played. Followed up with Ellie Sargent with 5 in 6. Both attacking players could have the ability to cause problems and the Dons will need to be aware of the dangers these can offer.

The Dons themselves have had one of the greatest weeks of football within the club’s history. After seeing on Hashtag United 1-2 and Rugby Borough 1-0 and beating Long Crendon in the County Cup the Dons are on a 4-game winning run. During this time, they have scored 16 goals and only conceded 1, and after the results in the league. It cemented their best start to a league campaign within tier 3.

I’ve run out of words to say about this group & staff. Incredibly proud of the way in which they’ve found ways to gain 6 points against the top two sides in this league. We set the highest standards for ourselves & this week shows it with two phenomenal efforts.

Charlie Bill also thanked the efforts of the fans for their support week in and week out, and once again this support will play a massive part on Sunday in Cardiff.

Ahead of the game we also caught up with the Dons very own Welsh Wizard in Laura Mitchell and asked her a few questions ahead of the big tip to Wales.

So far this season Laura has been one of the lead players for Charlie Bill’s side. Laura is currently leading the goal scoring charts with 8 goals in 10 games, and once again Mitchell will be hopeful for more this weekend in Cardiff.

How will you feel playing back in Wales let alone being in the capital?
It’ll feel great playing back in Wales, it’s been a few years since I’ve had a match there and it’ll feel nostalgic for sure. I’ll have some family watching as well which will make it a really special occasion.

Do you still have aspirations to play for Wales in the future?
I think all players have aspirations to play for their country or at the highest level possible and it’s no different for me. I played for the national team throughout my teenage years and had some great experiences playing in countries around the world. I don’t feel any pressure for the match I just want the team to get another three points and to personally perform as well as I can.

How do you feel like the season has gone so far on a personal/team note?
We’ve had a great start to the season and we’re sitting in a comfortable position in the league, but we still want to push on and challenge the teams above us. we’ve beaten Hashtag and Rugby in our last games which shows just how well we can compete and get important results when it matters! personally, the season couldn’t have started any better for me, scoring 8 goals in 10 games”.

Over the summer, one of my goals was to really improve my fitness levels and I’ve managed to do that by running longer distances outside of training. it’s really rewarding to see how the running has impacted my performances on the pitch as well as my numbers of goals and assists.

Do you feel like the team will be up for the fight?
Well definitely be up for the fight and we’ll go into the game full of confidence after beating Hashtag and Rugby, who were both at the top of the league before we played them. it’ll be a special occasion for everyone but personally I’m really excited to play back in my home country once again and hopefully get another three points on the board!
