Sheffield FC’s remarkable form in November earned manager Graham Abercrombie the FA Women’s National League Division One Manager of the Month award. In recognition of the team’s three wins and a draw, which included big wins over Lincoln United (6-1) and Worcester City (4-1).
Holly had the pleasure of speaking with Abercrombie in an exclusive interview for Since 71, where the Sheffield boss reflected on the collective effort behind the award. He also looked back on his own career journey, discussing the standards and culture being embedded at Sheffield FC as well as outlining his intentions for the future, both on and off the pitch.
Abercrombie Hails Collective Effort After Manager of the Month Honour
November was a defining period for Sheffield, who combined attacking flair with defensive discipline, continuing the momentum built earlier in the season despite a demanding fixture schedule.
“We’re really pleased, not just with November, but with how the season has gone overall,” Abercrombie said. “Remaining undefeated over that period was important, but what made me prouder was how the players approached every game. They kept their heads up and gave everything, no matter the challenge.”
Defensive Identity and Finding Balance
“We only conceded two goals that month, which is excellent,” he said. “Being tough, resilient, and difficult to break down is part of our DNA. That has not changed since last season when we earned promotion.”
While defence remains a strength, Abercrombie believes the team have now found the right balance with their attacking play.
“We have struck the right mix – staying solid at the back while creating chances going forward. It is a balance we have achieved, but we will not become complacent.”
A Defining Moment
When asked about standout results, Abercrombie singled out the 1-0 victory over Boldmere. He explained, “That win was special because it gave the players tangible evidence of what we’d been telling them,” he said. “Belief is one thing you can coach but seeing it on the pitch makes all the difference.”
Another highlight was the away trip to Worcester; a club closely tied to Abercrombie’s coaching journey.
“That was emotional for me,” he said. “It is where my coaching career in women’s football began 18 years ago. Returning there and winning felt very special.”
No Fear of the Break
As the festive period approached, some teams might worry about losing momentum. Abercrombie, however, is confident Sheffield will pick up right where they left off.
“The break isn’t a concern,” he said. “We will continue training, but players should also enjoy time with their families. Hard work and enjoyment go hand in hand, and I am confident we will resume in the new year, ready to perform at the same level.”
“This Is About the Players”
Despite the personal accolade, Abercrombie was keen to credit the squad and staff.
“The recognition has very little to do with me,” he said. “The players deserve 85–90% of the credit. The coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes make up the rest. These contributions often go unnoticed but are crucial to our success.”
He joked that the award might be better named Team of the Month.
Supporters and Standards
Abercrombie also praised Sheffield’s loyal fans, who have been rewarded after years of supporting the women’s team through challenges.
“2025 has been an exceptional year for our supporters,” he said. “They’ve stuck with us through tough times, and it’s fantastic to see them enjoying the results on the pitch.”
Looking ahead, the message to players and fans alike is clear: standards will not drop.
“The target is straightforward – keep winning. Every match is a new opportunity, and we approach each one with the same focus and determination.”
Promotion Ambition
While Abercrombie views promotion as a two-year project, he believes Sheffield’s squad is capable of achieving it this season.
“This group has matured and grown into its own, and the new play-off place presents a real opportunity. Promotion within the next two seasons is realistic, and we will keep working toward it.”

Ambition and Vision
Looking further ahead, Abercrombie remains focused on trophies and long-term stability.
“I want to win as much silverware as possible and stay with this club for the long term,” he said. “My ambition aligns with the club’s – success, promotion, and continual progress. Every season, every match, we push for excellence.”
With the unbeaten November behind them, Sheffield FC Women are now setting their sights on maintaining momentum, striving for further victories, and continuing to impress their supporters.
Looking Ahead After the Break
Sheffield FC resumes league action after the winter break, sitting fourth in the table on goal difference, just behind Barnsley, Peterborough, and Boldmere St Michaels. Their first match back sees them host Leafield Athletic this weekend, who sit one place and two points below them. Abercrombie will be hoping to see his team maintain their unbeaten momentum as they aim to close the gap at the top and continue their strong season.
