Chelsea were unable to make home advantage count as Everton claimed a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, leaving the Blues frustrated after dropping points in the Women’s Super League title race.

Sandy Baltimore gave the hosts the lead with a well-worked set-piece finish, but Lucy Bronze’s unfortunate own goal brought Everton back into the contest before the interval. Despite recording 20 shots, eight of which were on target, Chelsea could not find a winning goal against a determined visiting defence.

After the match, Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor admitted her side had fallen short of the required standards, pointing to a lack of intensity, attacking cohesion and composure in front of goal.

“I think today the performance was not good enough for us to probably get a better result,” Bompastor admitted.

“I think with the ball, we were probably too slow. We had 20 shots on goal, 8 on target.”

Bompastor Criticises Lack Of Intensity

Bompastor was particularly disappointed with Chelsea’s inability to turn their attacking pressure into clear-cut opportunities. The Blues had plenty of goal attempts but lacked the clinical edge needed to overcome Everton’s defensive organisation.

“Even when we shot on target, we were not clinical enough, not ruthless enough, and I don’t think we made the goalkeeper for Everton work hard enough,” she explained.

The Chelsea manager also acknowledged the physical challenge posed by Everton, who arrived at Stamford Bridge having established themselves as a difficult side to break down.

“I think we knew coming into this game, Everton didn’t concede much,” she said. “They are a really difficult team to break down.”

However, Bompastor felt her team’s shortcomings went beyond their finishing, highlighting a lack of understanding between players and insufficient intensity across the pitch.

“We lacked some intensity. I think also the connection between the players. It didn’t click really today,” she admitted.

“In terms of the defensive aspects, I think today we were not compact enough as a block. We didn’t recover enough balls in terms of the high press.”

The Chelsea boss also discussed her decision to make a half-time substitution, explaining that she wanted to introduce a player who could offer greater movement in behind Everton’s defensive line. She emphasised the need to adapt Chelsea’s attacking approach depending on the opposition and make better use of the spaces available.

Despite her frustration, Bompastor insisted the squad must take the necessary lessons from the performance before turning their attention to the next fixture.

“So it happens sometimes, as much as we are frustrated. Now it’s for us to analyse the game, take the feedback, and move on to the next one.”

Scott Phelan Praises Players’ Determination

While Chelsea were left to reflect on a missed opportunity, Everton’s head coach was delighted with the resilience shown by his side against one of the WSL’s leading teams.

Although the visitors conceded from a set piece, the Everton boss felt her players had done well to restrict Chelsea’s attacking threat and prevent the hosts from building on their early advantage.

“I was disappointed that the goal was actually from a set piece,” she admitted. “But the fact that we limited them to one was something that I thought was fair overall in the game.”

The manager stressed the importance of remaining disciplined against stronger opposition, believing Everton’s approach had given them a genuine opportunity to take something from the game.

“You have to give yourself a chance in these games. And you try not to do anything reckless that puts you on your back foot straight away.”

She was also pleased with the confidence her players developed as the contest progressed, particularly after navigating Chelsea’s early pressure.

“I thought we managed the initial moments of the game really well to create some momentum and confidence within the group.”

Everton’s equaliser before the interval provided another boost, allowing the visitors to approach the second half with renewed belief.

“Overall, really, really pleased and proud of the players today.”

Blundell Earns Praise On Return

Former Chelsea defender Hannah Blundell was among Everton’s standout performers, producing an impressive display against her former club.

The defender played a key role in limiting Chelsea’s attacking opportunities, making several important interceptions, clearances and challenges throughout the 90 minutes. Her contribution was recognised with the Player of the Match award, which Everton’s head coach believed was thoroughly deserved.

“She’s obviously an ex-Chelsea player, and this would have been a nice occasion for her,” the Everton manager explained.

“For that to be acknowledged with a Player of the Match award is rightly so, I thought.”

The Everton boss also highlighted Blundell’s experience and influence within the squad, praising the defender’s continued contribution to the club.

“She’s had an amazing career, and she continues to do that at our football club, and we’re really happy that we’ve got hold of her.”

Blundell’s individual performance was reflective of Everton’s wider defensive effort, with the visitors repeatedly standing firm despite facing sustained pressure from the hosts.

Everton’s Progress Provides Encouragement

The draw offered further encouragement for Everton as they continue to develop under their current management, following another positive showing against Manchester United.

Discussing the team’s progress, the Everton manager acknowledged that the squad was still in the early stages of its development but was pleased with the improvements being made.

“We’re very new into our build, and it’s a group and team very much in its infancy,” she explained.

“Whilst we’re learning to develop, it’s wonderful to be able to be competitive against the stronger teams in the league.”

The Everton boss believes performances against established WSL sides will provide valuable experience as the club continues to pursue its ambitions of European qualification.

Holding Chelsea to a draw at Stamford Bridge demonstrated the visitors’ growing ability to remain organised under pressure while still posing a threat going forward. Their resilience throughout the contest also provided another indication of the confidence developing within the squad.

Attention Turns Towards Manchester City

Chelsea now face a demanding period, with a midweek fixture preceding an important WSL meeting with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. With City sitting at the top of the table, the upcoming encounter could have significant implications for the Blues’ title ambitions.

However, Bompastor believes the quick turnaround offers her players an immediate opportunity to respond to their disappointing result against Everton.

“I think for me it’s the best that can happen when you have a frustrating result, to play a week just after that,” she said.

“So the quick turnaround is actually a positive thing.”

The Chelsea manager also stressed the importance of maintaining perspective throughout a long and demanding campaign, regardless of whether results go their way.

“When we are doing well, not to go too high. When we have a frustrating result, not to go too low, because I still believe this team has a lot of quality.”

The draw against Everton represents a setback for Chelsea’s title ambitions, with their inability to turn territorial dominance into goals ultimately costing them two points. Bompastor will now be looking for a more clinical and cohesive performance when her side returns to action.

For Everton, meanwhile, the result provides another confidence boost as they look to build on their recent progress and continue challenging the WSL’s established sides.

With both teams facing important fixtures before the international break, there is little time to dwell on the result, but Chelsea will know improvements are needed if they are to maintain their pursuit of the league leaders.
