Chelsea FC began their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Austria Wien at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, with both sides producing a competitive contest under the lights.
The hosts made a bright start and took the lead in the 11th minute. Wieke Kaptein picked up the ball on the edge of the box before striking an excellent effort that crashed against the underside of the crossbar and found the back of the net.
The Blues were given cause for concern shortly afterwards when captain Keira Walsh was forced off in the 20th minute and replaced, although the hosts continued to control much of the play.
Austria Wien responded well to falling behind and began to threaten the Chelsea defence, creating several opportunities as they searched for an equaliser. Chelsea also had chances to extend their advantage, but neither side was able to find another goal.
The visitors continued to push for a way back into the game as the match entered its closing stages, but Chelsea held firm to secure a 1-0 victory.
Kaptein’s early strike proved enough to give Chelsea all three points and ensure they made a winning start to their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.
