Bristol City Target Three Points Against Wolves After Midweek Lessons

Bristol City head into Sunday afternoon’s clash with Wolves determined to turn encouraging performances into points, with head coach Charlotte Healy reflecting on the positives from their midweek defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The Robins welcome Wolves to Ashton Gate looking to build on the intensity and aggression they have shown in recent outings, as they aim to strengthen their position in the WSL 2 table.

Despite losing to Charlton, Bristol City showed plenty of encouraging signs, even after being reduced to 10 players. Defensive issues from set-pieces proved costly, leaving Healy keen to see her side take the positives into the weekend while improving in key areas.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture, the head coach highlighted the importance of maintaining their recent progress while finding greater variety in possession against a side she expects to pose a significant threat on the counter-attack.

Looking to Build on Charlton Performance

Bristol City’s midweek defeat to Charlton provided Healy with an opportunity to rotate her squad, assess younger players and test different tactical approaches against WSL opposition.

The head coach was encouraged by her side’s response after going down to 10 players, revealing that the Robins still enjoyed 60 per cent possession despite the disadvantage.

Their pressing, aggression and intensity were also among the aspects that pleased Healy, who believes there were plenty of positives to take into Sunday’s encounter; however, conceding twice from set-pieces was a source of frustration, particularly given her side’s previous strength in that area.

She said: “Even when we went down to 10 players, to be honest, I was really pleased with the response of the group. Even with 10 players, we’ve had 60% possession, which tells us that we were able to dominate even when the odds were against us.“

“I thought about how we pressed, our aggression and the intensity that we had. I thought we really stopped Charlton playing.”

Despite the defeat, the performance offered valuable lessons as Bristol City continue through a busy run of fixtures.

She added: “There were a lot of things I really liked. I learned quite a lot as well, to be honest, about the group. For us now, it’s about building on the things that we really liked and taking those into the Wolves on Sunday.”

The Robins will be hoping to translate those encouraging displays into a positive result on Sunday, with Healy stressing that the behaviours and mentality shown in midweek must carry over into their next league outing.

Dangerous Opposition

Wolves arrive at Ashton Gate having made a competitive start to life in WSL 2 following their promotion, with Healy impressed by their ability to adapt to the division.

The Bristol City boss expects the visitors to press aggressively from a mid-block and put pressure on the ball, while also posing a threat when opportunities arise to counter-attack.

She believes her side must be prepared to deal with those strengths while exploiting opportunities of their own.

Healy said: “I think they’ve competed really well. They’ve picked up good points in the league, and obviously they’re a newly promoted side. I think they’ve adapted really well.“

“They’re in the WSL 2, and they’ve shown that they can compete at this level.”

With both teams looking to make progress in the league, the head coach anticipates another demanding contest, insisting her side cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.

She added: “I think it’ll be a competitive game like every game in this league is, to be honest. Whether you were competing at the top end of the table last year or you’re newly promoted, we prepare the same way because there are no given results in this league.”

Healy also identified the need for greater variety in possession as an important area of development for her side.

While Bristol City have improved defensively and become more aggressive out of possession in recent weeks, she believes they must become less predictable when building attacks.

“We have to be clean with our actions if we’re going to do that because if we don’t, we know the threats that they have on the counter-attack and we know the threats that they have from set-pieces as well,” she explained.

Team News

Bristol City could be without Eilidh Shore for a period after she suffered a suspected hip flexor injury during the midweek fixture against Charlton.

The injury came just 18 minutes into her first start after working her way back to fitness through appearances for the club’s Under-21s.

Healy admitted the situation was disappointing, particularly given the progress the player had made before returning to the starting line-up.

She said: “It looks like a hip flexor injury for her, which we’re devastated for her, to be honest, because she’s worked so hard to get back.“

“She played some minutes for our 21s to get her back to match fitness, and obviously this was her first start, and she’s done that after 18 minutes.”

A scan was expected to provide a clearer indication of the injury’s severity and potential recovery period, with Healy unwilling to speculate before receiving further medical information.

The head coach also acknowledged that Bristol City are dealing with several longer-term injuries, leaving the squad relatively thin in certain areas; however, the opportunity to rotate the team and give younger players valuable minutes during the week has helped provide some freshness ahead of Sunday.

Young Players Provide Encouragement

The midweek fixture also offered opportunities for the Robins’ younger players to gain experience against senior opposition, something Charlotte views as an important part of the club’s long-term development.

The head coach was particularly pleased with the contributions of Chloe Giddings and Ella Smith, who both came on after they had been reduced to 10 players.

She praised their composure, aggression and willingness to compete in difficult circumstances, highlighting the importance of creating an environment in which academy players can make the transition into the first team.

Healy said: “The most pleasing thing for me is always that when you give young players an opportunity, that’s always exciting for me and important to me.”

“I thought they actually had really positive impacts.”

With the fixture schedule demanding depth across the squad, the head coach believes those opportunities are vital, while stressing that young players need time, support and patience as they develop.

Bristol City’s academy pathway remains a key part of the club’s identity, and Healy is keen to ensure players are given the right opportunities at the right time rather than being rushed into senior football.

The experience gained against Charlton could prove valuable as the Robins look to navigate their busy schedule and maintain their competitive level throughout the season.

Ruthlessness Needed in Front of Goal

Another key focus for Bristol City will be their attacking output, with Healy keen to see her side become more effective when opportunities arise.

The head coach believes her players have shown encouraging signs in recent weeks but wants them to strike the right balance between being direct and building attacks through possession.

Against Wolves, she expects her side to ask more questions of the visitors defensively and make the most of their chances.

Healy said: “Ultimately, we’ve got to make Wolves defend on Sunday. We’ve got to ask questions of them. We’ve got to make them defend their box, and we’ve got to be ruthless when we get our opportunities.“

“If we do that and we continue to build, then we give ourselves every chance.”

The Robins will also be looking to make the most of home advantage, with Healy emphasising the importance of picking up points in front of their supporters.

Bristol City enjoyed strong home form last season and will be keen to recreate that atmosphere and consistency as they look to improve on their previous fourth-place finish.

With Wolves expected to provide a stern test, the hosts will need to combine their recent defensive improvements with greater creativity and composure in possession.

Sunday’s encounter offers Bristol City an opportunity to put their midweek lessons into practice, respond positively to defeat and take an important step towards their ambitions for the season.
