World Cup Preview: England vs United States of America

England Lionesses 3-0 Norway

England’s semi-final match kicks off against the favourites the USA. This should have been the final really. A massive game for both teams and is going to be a classic. England having last played the USA at the She Believes Cup and securing a draw. Both teams know each other well, it will come down to whoever scores their chances. They will be no doubt the toughest test for both teams so far in this World Cup.

USA have a strong squad of players who are scoring at will in this world cup. Having scored a massive twenty-two goals already and have only conceded two goals. The tempo they play at, England will need to be at their best. The only way that England can win this match, will down to players closing the ball down early and not giving the ball away so easily. Defensively both teams are very strong as England have only conceded one goal all tournament. If England can start strong and maybe snatch a goal early, may put the USA team under pressure. We haven’t seen this at the world cup so far for the USA.

There are so many key players in this match for England, Lucy Bronze and the defence will have to play the best game ever. If they are to stop the amazing Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan. Ellen White has set a benchmark for this team and will score again if she gets the chance. This is a game for the girls to shine. And someone can make a name for themselves on the highest platform. Team selection must be a strong, physical side, that can match the USA for pace and attacking football.

The USA’s form so far in this world cup has been outstanding, Beaten teams at will. They did need two penalties to beat Spain though. Again, the strength of this team in depth. There are again so many key players. Morgan and Rapinoe will need to be at their best to beat the England defence. Julie Ertz is another key player in midfield. Very experienced player and having scored an own goal in the final in 2015, will be looking to have a positive impact on this game.

I believe that England will set up as a 4-3-3 again. And will use the width of the wingers to create chances. The USA will go for an attacking 4-4-3 system again. This is a system that they are used too. And have swept teams away with it. Prediction wise, I think that the USA will be just too strong for England. And there will one goal in it. However, 2019 is the year of the underdog And would be truly deserved win, if England can do it.
