There is, however, positive news as Gabby George and Fridolina Rolfö have returned to training. George could feature on the bench if she completes training successfully on Friday.

Looking ahead to the challenge Liverpool pose, Skinner highlighted the changes to their squad following a busy January transfer window, which saw six new arrivals, including three forwards.

“It will be a different team to the one we saw before Christmas,” he said. “We expect them to be tough, aggressive in the press, and full of energy. We have to predict every option they have available, but we also have to be able to play through that energy.”

He added: “They’ve kept two clean sheets in their last two games, which will be tough for anyone.”

Skinner also suggested United’s transfer business is complete, stating he is “happy with the depth” of the squad after making three January signings.

Manchester United could climb to second in the table if results go their way this weekend. Liverpool, meanwhile, are searching for their second league win of the season and will be hoping to cause a major upset that could unsettle teams competing for Champions League qualification.

When asked about the rivalry compared to the men’s fixture, Skinner said: “We welcome the challenge.” He added: “Liverpool are in a transition period — they want to get back to their glory days — and it’s important for the fans to have these head-to-head matches.”

Sunday’s match is United Women’s closest home fixture to the 68th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster. Both teams will wear black armbands, a wreath will be laid before kick-off, and large commemorative flags will be displayed in the North Stand.
