It’s been seven months since Bayern Munich lifted the first-ever W7F trophy in Estoril, Portugal. Following the popularity of the inaugural tournament—and hot off the heels of The Ballers League in London—we now find ourselves in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at Beyond Bancard Field for the second World Sevens Tournament.
Ahead of today’s opening game, we caught up with ex–Manchester United star and double World Cup winner Tobin Heath. Tobin is on the Players Advisory Council for the World Sevens Tournament, and she’s just as excited as we are for the action to begin.
“Women’s football culture has always emulated the men’s game, but here there are no blueprints for the girls to follow. The way they’re walking out onto the pitch, the way they’re celebrating, they’re speaking the way they want—and now we’re seeing this new format unfold.”
“World Sevens is ready to make that change to women’s football.”
“As a player, I always loved 7v7 in training, but this is just a bit more exciting. I’m actually jealous I’m not able to play—that’s why I’m here on the council.”
Tobin also commented on the prize pot and its impact not just on the teams, but on the younger generation, too:
“I watched the Women’s Champions League Final last season, and the comparison in prize money is shocking. Bayern Munich won the World Sevens Tournament and earned more than Arsenal did for their Champions League win.”
“The way the money is split is very different to most tournaments. This prize money goes straight to the players, and the clubs donate their share to youth setups. For the future generations watching these games, the money is transformative.”
Finally, Tobin shared what she’s most excited to see over the next few days:
“Definitely how the teams line up. Playing 7v7 in training is different to how we’ll see the same players perform in this tournament. Remember, there are no offsides here. Last tournament, we saw players forget and stick to what they know—holding their lines and not making those runs. It’s hard to adapt to the rules when you’re so used to playing 11v11.”
“Also, the fans—they were electric in Portugal. Because the format is so different, you can’t just pick up your phone and have a quick scroll, because you’re going to miss something important. That’s how quick the game is. It’s everything we love but in two 15-minute halves. It’s going to be so fun to see.”
Missed the last tournament? No problem—here’s what you need to know.
Tournament Format
- Match Duration: Two 15-minute halves (30 minutes total).
- Pitch Size: Half the size of a standard football field.
- Substitutions: Unlimited rolling subs, with 14 players eligible per match from a squad of up to 25.
- Tiebreakers: If tied, five minutes of extra time with teams reduced to five players, followed by golden goal or sudden-death penalties.
- No offsides!
- No yellow card for taking your top off in celebration (introduced mid-tournament last May).
The teams in May were all European, with Manchester United reaching the final but losing 2–1 to Bayern Munich despite taking an early lead through Simi Awujo. This time, all teams are from the Americas.
