Birmingham City produced a disciplined display to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate, with Wilma Leidhammar’s second-half goal proving decisive. The result sees Amy Merricks’ side edge closer to the top of the Women’s Super League 2 table, closing the gap on leaders Charlton.
Blues made a strong start, using the width well through Lily Crosthwaite and Océane Hurtré, though they were forced into an early change when Adrianna Franch went off injured. Lucy Thomas stepped in and quickly made her presence felt with a smart save to keep the scores level, while Birmingham also had penalty appeals waved away after Veatriki Sarri went down in the box. Martha Harris came closest before the break, striking the crossbar with a looping effort.
The visitors carried their momentum into the second half, creating a number of openings as Crosthwaite continued to cause problems, but they were initially unable to find the breakthrough. At the other end, Thomas remained alert, producing another key stop to deny Sophie Ingle from distance and keep Birmingham in control.
The decisive moment arrived on 69 minutes when Asato Miyagawa won the ball high up the pitch and fed Leidhammar, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner. Birmingham managed the closing stages well, with Lotta Lindström going close to adding a second, as they saw out the win to move within three points of the summit with a game in hand.
