Match Report: Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid

The El Derbi Madrileño between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid took place in front of an empty ground with COVID still in place. The two teams took to the pitch both teams were trying to find their footing in the game early on. But it was Atletico that took the lead when a corner on the 5th minute as a corner into the box rebounded off Laia Aleixandri Lopez that saw Merel Van Dongen smashed the ball home into the back of the net giving Atletico a 0-1 lead. The rebounded looked as is if it could have struck Laia hand but would have been harsh to give.

Both teams were still looking to get on top in the game. Atletico Madrid looked most likely to score though being on the attack as Real Madrid couldn’t get it going as they attacked. Deyna Castellanos had the next telling effort on the 29th minute that called Misa to pull off a smart save tipping the ball over the bar.

Sofia Jakobsson tried to get Real Madrid back in running forward but only found the side netting. A handball appeal for Real Madrid as the ball bounced up and off the arm of the Atletico defender but nothing given on the 44th minute. The half time whistle went with Atletico winning 0-1 in the derby.

The first chance of the second half came from the boot of Toni Duggan for Atletico Madrid. Atletico came out on the front foot pushing Real back. Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson had some lovely link-up play but as the ball is played in too Marta Cardona a perfectly timed tackle by Alia Guagni sees the attack break down, but in the appeals by Real Madrid it saw Kosovare Asllani pick up a yellow card.

As Atletico Madrid used a long ball over the top and got in behind Misa came off her line as sweeper-keeper to clear the ball from an on running Aissatou Tounkara. Another great save by Misa in the Real goal as Deyna Castellanos hit a shot as Toni Duggan was at the far post on the 63rd minute.

Real Madrid were piling the pressure on in the final minutes of the game but Atletico defended well to keep out the Real attacks. Substitute, Turid Knaak broke through the Real defence but her shot went over the bar. A final effort for Real came in as a header was cleared off the line by Atletico but a foul on Pauline Peyraud-Magnin just before the final whistle went as Atletico Madrid walked away the 0-1 winners.
