Sunderland secured a vital 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park, leaving the hosts rooted to the bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 table.
An early header from Eleanor Dale proved to be the difference in a contest where both goalkeepers took centre stage. Despite a spirited late surge from the Blues, the Lasses held firm to take all three points back to Tyne and Wear.
Early Dominance from the Visitors
Sunderland Head Coach Mel Reay opted to rotate her squad following a gruelling schedule, handing starts to Dale and Hannah Greenwood. The decision paid immediate dividends. In the 5th minute, Jessica Brown delivered a precise cross from the right wing, allowing Dale to power a header home and give the visitors an early lead.
Portsmouth struggled to contain the early pressure. Niamh Peacock was forced into two vital blocks in quick succession, while Marissa Sheva saw a low effort roll agonisingly wide of the post. The visitors nearly doubled their advantage when Greenwood turned a delivery against the bar, though the defender was ultimately flagged for offside.

Goalkeeping Heroics
While the Lasses controlled much of the tempo, the match became a showcase for the two shot stoppers. Demi Lambourne was called into action on the half-hour mark, racing to the edge of her area to deny Tia Primmer in a one-on-one situation.
At the other end, Jess Gray kept Pompey in the hunt. Early in the second half, Gray produced a remarkable double save to deny Mared Griffiths and Dale in quick succession. Her resilience was tested again in the 72nd minute when she beat away a powerful strike from Sheva, who had found space in the box.
Late Frustration for the Blues
Portsmouth manager Jay Sadler turned to his bench in the closing stages, introducing Emma Jones and Angelina Nixon to bolster the attack. The tactical shift sparked a period of sustained pressure for the home side.
The best chance for an equaliser arrived in the 75th minute when Jones found Primmer on the flank. Her cross looked destined for Meg Hornby at the back post, but a superb recovery block from Brown cleared the danger. Deep into stoppage time, Nixon thought she had snatched a point with a looping header, only for Lambourne to produce a fingertip save to preserve the clean sheet.
