Match Report: Exeter City 2-8 Southampton Women

Southampton Women’s made it 10 points out of 12 with an 8-2 win away to Exeter City in the FA Women’s National League.

Lauren Clark and Jane Yeates opened the scoring in the first-half two fine top corner finishes.

There was eight goals in the second-half between the two sides that saw Kayleigh Tonks, EJ May and Tia Hooper all score their first goals for the club.

Aaron Smith made two changes from the team who drew with Southampton FC with Gracie White and May starting with Tonks and Hooper starting on the bench.

The first chance of the game fell to Hannah Samuels that was well saved by Rhiannon Dumper and Yeates couldn’t tap home the loose ball.

15 minutes played and Southampton found the net through Clark for her third goal this season.

May won the ball in middle before taking on two Exeter players to feed Clark who struck left footed into the top corner of the goal.

Dumper was certainly the busier goalkeeper keeping out two shots from Yeates and claiming Emily Wernham’s header.

Exeter had a couple of shots the first blocked by Kellie Warren while the second grazed over the crossbar.

Yeates and McKeever were denied in quick succession; Dumper parrying the striker’s shot while the Irish midfielder’s had a header cleared off the line.

Five minutes before the break saw the pressure from the visitors pay off.

Samuels breaking into the box pulled the ball back to Yeates on the edge of the area where she fired the ball into the top right-hand corner.

It didn’t take long after the restart before the lead was extended again by Yeates netting her fifth goal of the season.

Once again Samuels the provider, a stunning ball that dropped perfectly for Yeates to side foot past Dumper.

It was nearly the perfect day for Samuels who was denied a sensational goal by the post but a minute later Southampton did have the ball in the net.

Wernham was able to rush through towards goal following great pressure from May and herself the forward had time to tuck the ball into the net.

55 minutes played Smith made is first substitution with the game at 4-0, Tonks replacing Samuels and the forward had an instant impact.

Finding herself on the ball in the area and no time to think she smashed the ball past Dumper and into the corner of the goal grabbing her first goal of the campaign.

The game looked set but Exeter grabbed two quick goals; Megan Robinson shooting low on the turn before Abbie Britton caught Kite off her line to score from 40-yards out.

A possible comeback was cut shot thought when May tucked away for a her first goal after joining last week.

Kite made an important save to stop Anthea Kaptein from getting a third for Exeter and then Dumper was called into action tipping Tonks’ header over the bar.

Southampton made their final substitution as Hooper replaced White and the youngster not to be out done by Tonks found the net two minutes after coming on.

A great passage of play through the middle saw the ball out wide to Yeates to set Hooper up who lobbed the keeper for the visitor’s seventh goal.

The goal fest was completed in the 82nd minute defender Kellie Warren smashing home a header at the back post from Lauren Cheshire’s free-kick.

Yeates nearly bagged her hat-trick late on but Dumper was quick to react and saved at her near post.

Full-time came with a third win of the season for Southampton winning 8-2 and taking the three points back to Romsey.

With Cheltenham dropping points at Larkhall the south coasters currently sit top of the table on goal difference.
