Marc Skinner: United Must “Maximise The Moment”

Marc Skinner has challenged his Manchester United side to embrace the magnitude of the occasion and “maximise the moment” as they prepare to face Bayern Munich in a landmark Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford.

United’s European journey has already exceeded expectations, but Skinner made it clear his players are not approaching this tie as underdogs happy to be involved — instead, they are intent on pushing further into uncharted territory.

Reflecting on the club’s run to the last eight, Skinner stressed that progress alone is not enough at a club of United’s stature.

Skinner insisted United cannot afford to be satisfied with their achievements so far, saying: “You don’t just turn up and say thanks for the ride. We’ve got two magical nights of football ahead and we’ve got to maximise the moment.”

Miyazawa Returns, Rivière Boost as Janssen Misses Out

United have been boosted by the return of Hinata Miyazawa following international duty, with the midfielder immediately reintegrated into the squad.

Skinner revealed the positive mood around her return, highlighting both her physical readiness and the lift she has given the group.

Providing an update, Skinner said: “She’s on such a high… but she feels ready to go and trained absolutely fine, so she’s in contention to start.”

There is also a timely return for Jade Rivière, offering United added strength in wide areas, while Dominique Janssen is unavailable.

“Jade’s back and available… but Dom will miss this one,” Skinner confirmed.

Respect, But No Fear

Bayern Munich arrive with a significant pedigree, but United’s camp is focused firmly on their own identity rather than the reputation of their opponents.

Midfielder Julia Zigiotti Olme emphasised that belief and execution will be key if United are to trouble the German side.

Zigiotti Olme stressed the importance of sticking to United’s strengths, explaining: “We’re a good team; if we play our game, we can hurt them. It’s 90 minutes and we have to believe in ourselves.”

Skinner echoed that sentiment, outlining the tactical challenge of navigating a two-legged tie against elite opposition.

He said: “The game will swing in momentum… it will come down to moments. We have to manage the tie.”

Old Trafford Occasion

The match represents another milestone for United, with Old Trafford set to host a major European night, something Skinner believes his players are ready to handle.

Having already experienced high-pressure occasions this season, he backed his squad’s mentality to cope with both expectation and intensity.

“My players are used to pressure. They’re incredibly resilient,” Skinner said. “Regardless of the situation, we’ll fight to the very last minute.”

For Zigiotti Olme, the occasion also carries personal significance.

She said, “It’s a dream come true to play there. We’re all very excited.”

Togetherness As A “Secret Weapon”

While Bayern’s experience at this level is well established, Skinner believes United’s unity could prove decisive in closing the gap.

He pointed to the environment within the squad as a defining strength throughout their campaign.

Highlighting the team’s spirit, Skinner said: “That connection is our secret weapon. We’re competing against giants… but we’re bridging that gap quickly.”

Focus On The Immediate Challenge

The Bayern clash begins a run of three significant fixtures in quick succession, but Skinner insists his squad are fully focused on the task directly in front of them.

“We haven’t had time to think ahead it’s Bayern, then the next challenge,” he said.

He also praised the mentality of his players during a demanding stretch.

“They’ve been through the wringer, but they keep showing the right attitude. It’s a special group.”

Ruthlessness Could Decide The Tie

Skinner acknowledged that opportunities may be limited against a side of Bayern’s quality, placing emphasis on efficiency in front of goal.

He said: “We always create chances, but now we need to be ruthless. If we take our moments, we can have a magical night.”

Belief And Ambition Remain

Despite being seen by some as outsiders, there is a clear sense of belief within the United camp that they can compete and potentially progress.

“If you don’t believe, you might as well not play,” Skinner said. “We believe we can.”

Zigiotti Olme shared that optimism, pointing to the unpredictable nature of knockout football.

“Bigger upsets have happened — so let’s see,” she added.

“We Don’t Want To Stop Now”

Ultimately, Skinner’s message is one of ambition rather than caution, with United determined to extend their European journey.

He said: “We don’t want to stop now. We want no regrets.”

With Old Trafford set as the stage, United now have the opportunity to turn belief into another defining chapter in their European story.
