Lucy Quinn says Sheffield United’s clear vision, welcoming environment and defined role within the squad made her summer move an easy decision.
The Republic of Ireland international arrives with a wealth of experience and attacking intent, determined to help a youthful Sheffield United side find greater consistency and establish themselves as a stronger force this season.
After a period of uncertainty, as is often the case during the transfer window, Quinn welcomed the opportunity for a fresh start. A visit to the club, where she met staff and players and toured the facilities, proved decisive.
“It was just a really good experience,” Quinn explained. “Everyone was really welcoming; there are clear plans for the future and a clear idea of how I fit into the squad.”
The decision was also shaped by instinct, alongside conversations with family and her partner.
“You can look at things logically, but sometimes you’ve just got to follow your gut feeling,” she said.
Ultimately, Sheffield United felt like the right fit for Quinn — both in terms of the timing of the move and the role she had been offered within a developing squad.
A Defined Role and Leadership Responsibility
One of the biggest attractions of the move was the clarity surrounding Quinn’s role on the pitch.

“I’ve been around the league and international football, so I think they want me to bring that voice and leadership,” she said. “Hopefully I can help in difficult moments and guide some of the younger players.”
Quinn jokes that “I can be a bit of a joker”, but she is embracing the responsibility that comes with being one of the more experienced players in the group.
Game management, maintaining composure and helping teammates through difficult moments are all areas where she believes her experience can make a difference.
Personal Targets Aligned With Club Ambitions
For Quinn, the individual objectives for the season are straightforward: consistency, regular minutes and attacking output.
“I want to become an important member of the squad and contribute regularly,” she said. “I’d love to play attacking football, show what I can do in front of goal and build consistency in my performances.”
Those ambitions dovetail with Sheffield United’s own objectives.
Following an inconsistent campaign last season, the club is looking to produce more consistent results and establish a stronger presence across the league.
Quinn believes the foundations are already being put in place, particularly with the women’s team now benefiting from dedicated facilities, including their own pitches, gym and changing rooms.
“It gives you a real sense of belonging,” she explained. “Having your own space helps you get the best out of yourself as a team.”
For Quinn, that sense of belonging can play an important role in creating the environment required for a team to progress.
Leaving Birmingham on a High
The move to Sheffield United follows a successful spell at Birmingham City, where Quinn played an important role in helping the club secure promotion.
Having experienced both relegation and success during her time at Birmingham, she leaves with a strong sense of pride in what was achieved.
“I feel like I’ve left the club in a much better place than when I joined,” she said. “Winning promotion was really important; you don’t get many chances to win silverware in your career, so to do it twice is something I’m really proud of.”
That experience of both adversity and success is something Quinn can now bring to a new-look Sheffield United squad.
A Club Built on Unity
It has not taken Quinn long to identify what she sees as a defining characteristic of Sheffield United: a strong sense of togetherness.
The club’s hardworking identity and connection with its supporters have already made an impression, with Quinn believing that family feel extends beyond the dressing room.
“It’s always been a tough place to come and play,” she said. “There’s a real family feel here, and that’s important especially for younger fans watching what a team should represent.”
The city itself has also made an early impression, offering Quinn a combination of city life and access to the surrounding countryside.
“It’s stunning,” Quinn added. “I didn’t realise how close it is to the Peak District or how green it is. Loads is going on, but also that balance where you can switch off.”
International Ambitions
Club success is not Quinn’s only ambition this season, with international football remaining an important part of her plans.
The Republic of Ireland international has World Cup qualification firmly in her sights and recognises that regular football at club level will be crucial to maintaining her place in the national team.
“To be involved internationally, I need to be playing regularly and showing what I can do,” she said. “Hopefully that leads to being part of another major tournament.”
For Quinn, therefore, a successful season at Sheffield United could have significance well beyond the club campaign.
A Grounded Off-Season
Away from football, Quinn opted for a quieter off-season, using the summer to rest and recover ahead of her international commitments.
Time spent visiting family on the Isle of Wight and in Devon, combined with long walks with her new puppy, provided the perfect opportunity to switch off.
Her sausage dog has quickly become a central part of her routine — something Quinn can see the funny side of.
“He’s full of energy and doesn’t care if I’ve had a bad game; he just wants to go for a walk,” she said. “It’s a great way to switch off.”
It is a simple routine, but one that has helped Quinn return to football refreshed and ready for the demands of a new chapter.
A Competitive Campaign Ahead
Quinn expects the new season to be fiercely competitive, with growing investment and ambition across the league creating an increasingly challenging environment.
“Every year feels more competitive,” she said. “There are a lot of teams pushing to be challengers, so it’ll be exciting to see how it unfolds.”
For Quinn and Sheffield United, the objective is clear: build consistency, maximise the potential within the squad and continue moving forward.
