After receiving her first Lionesses call up, Maya Le Tissier is looking ahead to a Winter trip to Spain after Sarina Wiegman shocked her with a phone call.

Le Tissier, who joined Manchester United from Brighton in the summer transfer window, was in the gym at United’s training ground when Wiegman rang her and missed the call.

It was Marc Skinner, United manager, who eventually broke the news to the defender.

“I was in the gym at United and didn’t have my phone on me, Marc comes in the gym and he’s never in the gym and in his normal clothes as well.

“I’m thinking ‘what is going on here?’ We were obviously preparing for the big game (vs Chelsea), so I thought ‘oh god am I getting dropped or something? He comes in and pulls me out and says Sarina would like to call you up for the seniors, here’s the phone.”

A jubilant Le Tissier continued to say how she texted her parents with the news, before returning to the gym. Unsurprisingly, her phone blew up for the next hour when she was unresponsive.

She continued: “The players that are here, I’m just like, wow, I can’t believe I am in the same room as you.

“It’s been mad, it’s what dreams are made of, moving to United, having a good start to the season, getting my first call up it’s unbelievable, I’m really pleased.”

The Lionesses make the trip to Spain this week to take on Japan and Norway, on Friday 11 and Tuesday 15, respectively.

They will be without Lauren Hemp, Jordan Nobbs and Fran Kirby for the trip, who have withdrawn from the squad following precaution and injury. As well as captain Leah Williamson who was injured earlier during the season playing for her club, Arsenal.
