Bunny Shaw Strikes as Manchester City Fight Back Against Real Madrid

Manchester City were forced to settle for a point on Thursday evening after drawing 1-1 with Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League at the Joie Stadium.

Andrée Jeglertz’s side went into the clash looking for their first victory of the Champions League league phase after drawing 2-2 with Bayern Munich in their opening fixture.

City started brightly and looked dangerous going forward, creating several promising opportunities during the opening stages.

Mary Fowler came closest to breaking the deadlock inside the first nine minutes when she met an Alex Greenwood delivery, only to see her header crash back off the crossbar.

Bunny Shaw then went close herself, with her header forcing Real Madrid goalkeeper Merle Frohms into a save as City continued to apply pressure.

Despite the hosts’ positive start, it was Real Madrid who struck first in the 29th minute.

Linda Caicedo collected the ball on the right before driving towards the City penalty area and keeping her composure to send a low finish beyond Ayaka Yamashita and give the visitors the lead.

City responded by pushing for an equaliser before the break, but Real Madrid held firm to take their advantage into half-time.

The hosts returned for the second half with renewed purpose, and it took just six minutes for them to restore parity.

Yui Hasegawa helped City win possession high up the pitch before the ball found Shaw inside the area. The Jamaican striker turned away from her marker and calmly picked out the far corner to make it 1-1 in the 51st minute.

It was a deserved reward for City’s persistence and gave the hosts a platform to push for a winner.

As the second half developed, the game became increasingly open, with both sides sensing there was an opportunity to take all three points.

Hasegawa continued to influence proceedings in midfield, while Jeglertz turned to his bench in the 63rd minute, introducing Sam Coffey, Beth Mead and Grace Clinton for Laura Blindkilde Brown, Fowler and Aoba Fujino.

Mead almost made an immediate impact, coming within inches of putting City ahead with a close-range header.

City made another change nine minutes later, with Niamh Charles replacing Kerstin Casparij as the hosts continued to search for a decisive second goal.

Real Madrid also made a series of changes as they attempted to regain control. Sara Däbritz, Lotte Keukelaar and Lineth Beerensteyn were introduced in the 64th minute, followed by Irune Dorado four minutes later. Signe Bruun then replaced Caicedo with six minutes of normal time remaining.

The visitors appeared to have snatched a late winner through Sílvia Cristóbal, but the goal was ruled out after referee Silvia Gasperotti had already stopped play following a collision involving Mead.

It proved to be a crucial moment for City, who could have been left with nothing despite their second-half improvement.

There was still time for the hosts to create a winning opportunity of their own, with Lauren Hemp and Mead both looking to make an impact in the closing stages. However, neither side could find the breakthrough.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, leaving City with another point but still searching for their first Champions League victory of the season.

There were positives to take, particularly the way City responded to falling behind and their improved attacking threat after the interval. Shaw’s equaliser was the key moment, while Hasegawa’s work in winning possession and helping City control midfield also proved important.

City finished with 52.6 per cent possession and 13 shots, compared with Real Madrid’s 47.4 per cent possession and 21 attempts.

The result leaves City with two points from their opening two league-phase fixtures after also drawing with Bayern Munich.

Attention now turns back to domestic action, with Arsenal awaiting at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. City will be looking to turn their promising performances into a much-needed victory when they face the Gunners.
